Essential Hammock Camping Accessories
Essential hammock camping accessories, why do we even need them? Well, because they’re essential, duh!
As a passionate hammock camper, I can tell you firsthand that there’s nothing like swinging between the trees in your very own portable cocoon. But, let’s be real here, a bare-bones hammock and a couple of carabiners just won’t cut it for a truly comfortable and safe camping experience. Still, we have to start with the basics.
Hammock
That’s why I’m here to talk about the essential hammock camping accessories that every true hammock aficionado should have in their gear collection.
First and foremost, you’ll need a hammock that’s built for the great outdoors. You can take your chill, loungy garden hammock and toss it in the trash, then pick it back up and put it back up in your garden – hey! It’s still good enough for barbeques and a book read.
Look for a strong and durable fabric that can withstand the elements, and make sure it’s big enough to comfortably fit you and your gear. Having enough fabric is essential to get a good diagonal hang, which is how you sleep straight in a hammock.
Bug net
Let’s not forget the bug net. If there is ONE thing that you really don’t want to forget, it’s this one. Nothing ruins a good night’s sleep faster than being attacked by a horde of mosquitoes and the occasional crawling spider. Trust me on this one.
Rain fly/tarp
Next up, we have the rain fly/tarp. A tarp is pretty much a must-have for any hammock camper, unless you are camping under a roof. The rain tarp will keep you dry and cozy, even in a downpour. And, if you want to get really fancy, consider a rainfly/tent hybrid for ultimate protection from the elements.
Suspension straps
Last but certainly not least, we have the suspension straps. These little wonders are what is keeping you and your hammock above ground by attaching the hammock to the trees. Just be sure to choose straps that are strong, lightweight, and long enough to accommodate a variety of trees and anchoring points.
Also, pack a book. Because that is all I’m thinking about now, after the whole garden hammock incident.
Innovative hammock camping accessories
Ladies and gentlemen, hold onto your carabiners because I’m about to blow your minds with the latest and greatest in hammock camping accessories.
Integrated bug net
First up, we have the integrated bug net. This baby is a game-changer. No more fumbling with separate pieces of gear or accidentally leaving your bug net at home. With this guy, you’ll have everything you need in one convenient package. And, the best part? No more midnight mosquito attacks. Bonus!
Rain fly/tent hybrid
Next, we have the rainfly/tent hybrid. This accessory takes versatility to a whole new level. It functions as both a rainfly and a tent, providing ultimate protection from the elements and giving you a little more privacy when you need it. You can even set it up on the ground like a traditional tent. The options are endless!
And, let’s not forget the multi-functional hammock tarp. This baby can be used as a sunshade, a windbreak, or even as a ground cover for your gear. Talk about versatility!
So, there you have it folks, some of the latest and greatest in hammock camping accessories. And, if you’re looking for a little extra comfort and convenience on your next outdoor adventure, these innovative pieces of gear are definitely worth considering. Just don’t forget the most important accessory of all: a good sense of humor. After all, what’s the point of camping if you can’t have a little fun and make some jokes around the campfire?
Cup holder
No more spilling your drinks in your hammock! Just pick up a cup holder and suspend your drink underneath your hammock while you sway back and forth. Gimmicky? Perhaps. Fun? Absolutely
Snake skins
Snake skins are an instant stuff sack system that let’s you pack and unpack your hammock in a very short amount of time. It doesn’t get dirty on the ground, it just works. And it’s great.
Lightweight hammock suspension straps
You might be fine with your standard straps at first, but if you aim to backpack out in the backcountry with your hammock, you’ll be looking to shave some ounces and grams here and there.
By picking up some more lightweight straps, like the eno Helios ultralight, you can make everything about hammock camping straps work in your favor. You’ll be skipping a step in no time.

How Do I Know Which Accessories I Need for My Hammock Camping Adventure?
Ah, the age-old question: how do you choose the right hammock camping gear? Choosing the right gear for your camping trip can make all the difference in terms of comfort, safety, and overall enjoyment.
Firstly, try to really think about your needs for your forthcoming adventure. What do you REALLY need? Ultralight hammock straps won’t do you any good if you’re car camping. Likewise, bringing a lot of fun and weighty accessories might be more suitable for car camping than backpacking the backcountry.
A rainfly/tent hybrid will come in handy in most situations, seeing as you can pitch a tent above the treeline, or in areas with scarce trees, like say, the desert.
Think about personal comfort preferences. Are you looking for a hammock with extra room for gear storage? Do you want a hammock with a built-in pillow? It’s important to choose gear that fits your needs and comfort preferences.
It’s really the demands and nature of your chosen adventure and your own personal preferences that dictate what will come in handy.
Budget-friendly hammock camping gear
Hammock camping gear can be a bit pricey, but fear not, because there are plenty of budget-friendly options out there. Whether you’re on a tight budget or just looking to save a few bucks, these cost-effective options will have you camping in comfort without breaking the bank.
When it comes to hammock camping suspension straps, you should be able to pick up a pair for around 20 bucks, perhaps even less, for your first pair. I’ve even seen some guys make DIY-suspension straps. Although, I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s usually rope, which will damage the trees, or it will not be not cost-effective to the amount of time you will spend making them.
Next, we have budget-friendly bug nets. Even the cheaper ones will keep the creepy crawlies away and allow you to sleep soundly. And, who needs bells and whistles when you have sweet dreams? Be mindful – I’ve seen some stores luring people in to buy a cheap hammock, only to be pushing some waaaay overpriced basic nets on unsuspecting, newbie hammockers.
You can pick up a budget-friendly basic all-types-of-uses-tarp at the store. These tarps may not be as high-tech as some of the more expensive options, and they sure make a lot more sound when trying to sleep, but they’ll still provide protection from the elements and give you a little extra privacy.
So, there you have it folks, a few budget-friendly options for hammock camping gear. And, if you’re looking for even more ways to save money, consider buying gear secondhand or borrowing gear from friends. After all, the great outdoors is about enjoying nature, not about how much gear you have. Happy camping!
